What is FIRE?

Financial Independence, Retire Early (FIRE) is a movement dedicated to a program of extreme savings and investment that allows practitioners to retire far earlier than traditional budgets and retirement plans would permit.

The 4% Rule and Your FIRE Number

Your FIRE number is the total amount of invested capital you need to safely withdraw enough money each year to cover your living expenses without running out of money.

This is typically calculated using the 4% Rule (or a safe withdrawal rate of your choosing). The formula is simple: take your annual expenses and divide by your withdrawal rate, or multiply your annual expenses by 25. For example, if you need $60,000 per year to live comfortably, your FIRE number at a 4% withdrawal rate is $1,500,000.

Understanding the Math

Our modular calculator logic isolates variables like expected returns and inflation:

  • Expected Return Rate: The average annual growth of your investment portfolio. Historically, the S&P 500 returns around 7-10% annually before inflation.
  • Inflation Rate: The rate at which the cost of living increases. This constantly pushes your FIRE target higher over time.
  • Real Returns: The inflation-adjusted return rate of your portfolio.
